When you’re staying in one of their hotels in Cork there’s plenty of fun for all the family within easy travelling distance. Whether you’ve got the kids with you or you’re there for a golfing break with your pals or a romantic retreat the delights of the City are waiting to be uncorked!

Blarney Castle

The famous Blarney castle was built by Cormac MacCarthy around seven hundred years ago. It is now one of Cork’s major tourist attractions and few visitors leave the landmark without having kissed the famous Blarney Stone. Legend has it that if you do you’ll never be lost for words, although the act itself requires you to lean backwards over a dizzying but safe drop to land a smacker on the famous rock!

Take a Trip to Cobh

Cobh, as it is now known, was previously known as Queenstown and it is famous as the last port visited by the Titanic before its ill-fated maiden voyage. The town’s maritime heritage is well preserved and displayed for visitors. Cobh was also the embarkation point for the notorious coffin ships carrying Irish emigrants to the new world in the USA and for Convict vessels heading for Van Diemen’s land. The visitor centre allows you to experience the conditions aboard one of the cramped coffin ships or one of the convict vessels. Cobh is also associated with the passenger ship the Lusitania, sunk by a German torpedo during the First World War off the Cork coast resulting in the loss of 1,198 passengers and crew and leading in part to the United States entering the First World War

Tee Off at the Old Head of Kinsale

Ireland boasts many famous Golf courses but the Old Head of Kinsale is surely one of the most spectacular and daunting. On some of the holes you’d think the Atlantic itself was the water hazard as the great blue yonder sprawls in front of you. A wayward tee shot means your golf ball sleeps with the fishes. Afters you can head into the picturesque fishing village of Kinsale for some wonderful local seafood and a pint of Murphy’s or Beamish.

Fota Wildlife Park

Not many people know there are Cheetahs in Cork. All the more reason to visit Fota Wildlife Park where there is a tailor made cheetah run. Animals are central to everything that happens at Fota, There’s loads to do for the children aside from seeing the wild animals. There are play areas dotted around the Park and a host of activities on site including arts and crafts, face painting and African drumming. Visitors can see animals feeding and foraging for food while they enjoy a walk around the beautiful surrounds of Fota Island itself.

Given the important of language and clear communication in business, it is remarkable the poor quality of some of the material that makes it into print. I was looking the other day at the website of one graphic design and digital communication agency. Apart from the self indulgent pen pics of their personnel the overall content of their own site was thin on quality copy. They have well over a dozen members of staff. Creative this, director of that, lead creatives, not so lead creatives. Nowhere did it mention among the staff’s portfolios the skill of writing.

Graphic design as a discipline cannot neglect the written word. It is a tired cliché to say a picture may say a thousand words. That is if it is a decent picture. Otherwise that is a get-out clause for material that is lacking coherent content. A key part of design is typography. Typography is the art of arranging type to make language readable and accessible. It relates to the cut and design of letters and the space between them in sentences. It is self evident therefore that words are important. Yet why so often are words the poor relation of visuals and graphics? A highly professional business will retain the services of graphic designers, PR executives, photographers and so on yet they will write the copy themselves. As Red Adair said: “If you think it’s expensive to hire a professional to do the job, wait until you hire an amateur.”

This would be a fairly typical approach in my experience. Certainly some of the rambling incoherent nonsense that used to pass for staff submissions for promotional material when I worked at the University of Ulster showed little evidence of the stellar academic careers these people were supposed to have on their CV. And unbelievably the Faculty of Arts contributors were invariably among the worst. Scientists tend to be matter of fact if not obsessed with their gadgetry and kit. But that scientific brusqueness is better than purple prose and verbose diarrhoea directed pagewise by over sensitive and easily bruised academic egotists.

Breathing some life into copy can be a tricky assignment. The treatment that you can actually give it really depends on the attitude of the client. If they are of the view that you just need to get it out there then no matter how much the writer explains the value of good communication it can be a wasted exercise. Another problem can be adding someone to the project team who fancies themselves as a bit of wordsmith.

I had that with a client who introduced a self styled proofreader who then took issue with content written for a youth audience. My difficulty with this was that firstly it was written in a specific style for a specific purpose and secondly the client had agreed it. It was a debate going nowhere so it ended pretty quickly with an exit stage left.

It is not enough is writing to just pitch up with the pen and start writing. Any assignment requires research, background on the business and some sort of spark to ignite the creative process.

I have long standing clients that have bought into a specific way of describing their products and their brands. They are happy with it because I have explained the approach and the rationale. They in turn have a specific style and tone of voice that works across a series on print and new media. They took a chance at the outset on an approach that was quite different and it has paid off for them and crucially worked with their target audience.

For one client, specialising in industrial painting techniques I wrote their website in iambic pentameter. For another project, a script for an animation I mimicked the rhyme structure of Dr Seuss’s Lorax. I wrote a blog piece for a client that was directly drawn from WB Yeats Easter 1916. In discussing this with Angela she asked why? Had I explained this to the client. Was I being too clever for my own good. What is the point of these literary devices? Well the point is that it gives me a discipline within which to operate. It defines the borders of the job. It offers form and structure. And it can lead to inspiration from a piece of comparative writing whether that be in literature or poetry. It may be for example that one word is the prompt required to pursue a specific theme of writing.

For another client – a men’s clothing company, I used the Odyssey myth to describe the protagonists journey from a shopping expedition to a decadent night out. For another client the point of inspiration was the novel Chocolat by Joanne Harris with its luxuriant confectionary descriptions.

My brother in law cites a great saying of his parents, there’s no right way to do the wrong thing. It’s also very easy to write the wrong thing.

Writing in today’s Irish News Professor Stephen Brown of the University of Ulster explains the important of story telling. He’s right. And if you haven’t realised it, it’s all about content. It’s all around you. In every break in the game.

Years ago when I worked at the University of Ulster we produced a nifty wee news service called UUNews4U. Our boss hated it because he couldn’t understand it.

This was a veteran old schooler who considered a good day’s work a series of hefty memos dictated to senior colleagues about the issues of the day. That’s how work was done then.

Someone would write you a memo. You’d write one back. In the days before email you would throw it into the internal mail and let Gary the postman wing it off to the unsuspecting victim. If you were really on your game you might get a spluttering response that very same day.

Once a senior academic in the Faculty of Art and Design was so outraged over a kicking I’d given him in memo format we had to have a lunch arranged at the department’s expense to smooth over the outrage. He had sent a one line reply telling me my memo was so outrageous he was considering his options before he replied. The content was king. I was on the receiving end too especially from one vindictive admin wonk who I was sure pulled the legs off flies when he wasn’t being a pedantic nerd. Often his points had merit, but he was an objectionable being.

This was the guy who point blank refused to make textual amends and content additions to prospectuses onto a disk or electronic version to pass on to us for editing and publication. He preferred to make hard copy handwritten, glued, stapled, inked and scratched manuscript changes that were often indecipherable. He then wrote the ubiquitous memo criticising any errors, typos etc. So much for a content strategy. There were meetings and meetings and memos about the simple expedient of updating the content in electronic format for multiple uses.

Anyway, back to content. Our nifty news tool consisted of an opt-in email service in which we aggregated together links to all the main stories mentioning the University. Some were on the website, some in clippings files, some on external sites etc. The beauty was we tied the whole thing together in one circulation email, and because it was opt in we couldn’t be accused of spamming people.

My boss would get the email and he would get the secretary to print off all the stuff so he could read it. And then he would find something to criticise us for. I always pointed out that it was opt in and therefore people were receiving information of interest that they wanted unlike his perfectly crafted memos. I explained then that content was king – I had written in a dissertation that the exchange of information was a transaction that people valued and would value farther in the future as the web developed. How true.

He failed to grasp the point that we were being economical and resourceful with our content. Stuff was out there and we were maximising its use to build our brand internally and externally. The more tech savvy academic saw the cleverness in it. Yes there were bits and pieces that folk had already seen but they didn’t have to click on that story if they didn’t want to. But he didn’t see that because at that stage even the mouse was still a thing of mystery. He slowly but surely ensured that UUNews4U died a slow death.

In my next life I became a blogger. I wrote an entertaining blog on the GAA for the clothing brand Square Ball. The blog attracted a few thousand followers, eager for my fortnightly take on things sporting. We used it as a Trojan horse for the brand, presenting a firm tongue in cheek look at the GAA and all its pomposities that was linked intrinsically to the products we sold. It was reaching the parts other communications couldn’t.

I had messages passed on via intermediaries that senior people in various positions of importance weren’t comfortable with what I’d written. The thing also about Talking Balls was that it too was ahead of its time. It marginally predated the social media era. It was tailor made for Twitter, which hadn’t yet taken off. The now semi active Twitter account of the same name has shown there is still a market for the wry look at things. In fact it was named by the Irish Examiner as one of the top 50 influential Twitter accounts a few years back. My boss would have been horrified. I can just see him now reading through a print out of the twitter feed.

The important thing again was that content was king. I was able to reuse and repurpose material in a story-telling fashion that was good craic. The brand was about fun and that’s what our agenda was.

Since then I have written a range of material for a whole plethora of clients. Slowly but surely people are realising that telling the story can engage people.

If you watch the Dragons Den for example, the pitch is a condensed story, told in two minutes. The investors are often taken with the person and their tale as much as the brand. Often the Dragon invests in the person because of their story.

I myself feel like Cassandra doomed to tell the truth, condemned to disbelief as I tell this tale. I’ve already been that road on several occasions but circumstances have proved me right. The lesson is this. If you want to move your business on, you need to tell the story and tell it well. You can start by telling it to me and we can take it from there.

Our Town

There is an underlying meaning of bleakness and sadness about the word Omagh now. A layer of meaning added by people who knew nothing of the town, its past, its people, its spirit.

It’s our town. We grew up there. It was no different than other places I’m sure. But it was where we were born and raised. Lately although I no longer live there, the spirit of the town has raised itself in my mind. The utter bleakness is there of those August days but also the glimpses of a happy childhood. I feel in some way I need to reclaim them.

My son asked me the other day where I got my football boots when I was his age. I thought for a minute and replied ‘the Fairway Stores in Omagh’ and my mind flooded with memories of Frankie Bradley guffawing through his beard. With it memories of getting togged out in the dank, damp, dark dressing rooms of the Brothers Park.

At least it was better than St Pat’s Park with the flooded goalmouth and the brown stripped tree trunks for goals. Kit bags of mud caked jerseys for those brilliant Brothers primary football tournaments. Joe McElholm, Mr Farry, Harry Scully, Seamus Harkin and the boys. The craic they must have had in their staff room.

We used to leave St Colmcille’s to play football and dodge down along the side of the river Strule to get into the Park. Children would never be allowed to do that nowadays. One slip and you were in it. Never happened though.

The subject came up with my mother the other day. An Omagh woman all her life. She was raised in the Military Arms in McConnell Place, now the Hogshead. Every day she walked out to Culmore to the old primary school. She went on to the Convent. After studying at St Mary’s she returned to Omagh. My father was an Armagh man. He worked in the Brothers.

It was in Omagh that we were raised. It was our town. It was there we went to school. Like a native of any town, you know it like the back of your hand. As I grew older, I would walk through the town from the Hospital Road to my granny’s house on the Tamlaght Road. It was idyllic out there. I spent the best part of a year living with her when I was about three.  Until her passing in 1987 it was where I spent some of the happiest days of my life. We ourselves lived in the shadow of the County Hospital. It was our playground. Playing ball in the square. Being chased from the Old People’s home by an oul bitch of a matron: ‘Get outta here’ she’d roar arms a flapping.

I remember summer days in the Gortin Glens, at the Lovers’ Retreat or over at the Grange Park. Doing nothing much. For a while tennis was en vogue. Later times passed as we were older, idly up the town as Arty G vied with manic street preachers for audience share. Hanging about Robert Clarke’s record shop in Bridge Street. As a cub going down to watch Omagh Town play in the Showgrounds. The likes of Chimney Corner, the RUC and Dundela the opposition. Patsy Hetherington imperious at the back. I once signed him for my Subbuteo team he was that good.

Further on up the road Omagh St Enda’s, later Healy Park. Going to watch my first Tyrone match with my brother John. It was about 1975 against Sligo. Eugene McKenna scored the goal. The ground was all grassy banks but it was like a stadium to me. I kicked ball there for Omagh and against them for Killyclogher. Won a centenary year minor championship hurling medal there. I’ve since had some great days bringing the children to Healy Park in Omagh. Happy memories of the town.

Myself and Pete McCloskey used to go fishing round the town. I was a bad fisherman but we used to land the occasional silver bellied trout. Pete’s dad one time thought we should have put a fish or two back they were that small. He didn’t know the effort we’d put in to catching them, and I enjoyed gutting and eating them. We’d wander off up to the T&F and try our luck in the dark pools up there. Peter would catch something and I’d fill the wellies with water after falling in again. But the days passed slowly as if we were doing nothing at all.

There was music in Omagh. A vigorous band scene where lads with DMs, jeans and Harringtons would thrash the life out of cheap guitars and a drum kit in the minor town hall. In the summer they would pitch up on a trailer in O’Kane Park or Strule Park at a community festival, blasting out a deadly din altogether. Other lads would stand around smoking fags and eyeing up the girls.

There’s other things about the town that flood back if you let them. Jack’s chip shop in George’s Street. Gormley’s in Castle Street. As we got older, a pint of shandy and a microwaved burger in the Cellar Bar. Discos in Knocknamoe. Nights spent in the Mecca that was the GAA with Rock Stewart, the Memories and those discos with the massive dancefloor. You’d do more laps there looking at girls than you might do in training.

The town’s bookshop, the Carlisle bookshop where the owner would give you death if you were caught reading a paper or magazine in the shop. It became cat and mouse.

Omagh. The Herald on Thursdays. The Con. Father Rooney saying mass in that soft tone of his. Sitting about on the Courthouse steps before it too was blown up.  Those familiar places. The Royal Arms Mews. The Tech. Smokies. The Golden Griddle. Wellworths. John Taggart’s shoe repair shop, with that smell and your newly soled shoes in a brown paper wrapper, tied up with string. We grew up there.

That’s our town. On this day sixteen years ago the cloud descended. For all the people who were lost. For their relatives and friends. It was their town too. Still is. And the memories are just as powerful.

Carrowkeel

Carrowkeel Passage GraveAcross the Bricklieve (Breac Sliabh) range of mountains in South Sligo are a network of passage tombs at Carrowkeel.

Perched remotely on top of the hillside on the west side of Lough Arrow, I’d heard of the graves but had never been in the immediate vicinity to go and explore. Recently we had the opportunity.

This is Tuatha Dé Danann country, part of Moytura where they fought the Fomorians according to the Book of Invasions. The passage graves at Carrowkeel are thought to predate the Pyramids in Egypt by five hundred years or so.

Having decided to visit the graves, we ascended through increasingly bucolic roads that narrowed with a narrow landing strip of green grass along the middle. My brother John led the way in his hired car. Eventually we came to a gate at which we had to halt to open to proceed onwards.

It is part of our family mythology that years ago on a family holiday in Waterford, when we were all much younger, John as the navigator led us all the way up into the Nyre Valley, getting out and opening gate after gate along the way as we moved farther from civilisation. My dad had relied on John’s map reading skills as he was a keen geography student and a budding geologist of note. Eventually frustrated the oul fella said: ‘John where are we?’ to which he received the reply, ‘I don’t know.’

The journey up into the hills of Bricklieve brought a smile to my face and I reminded him of this as we dismounted to open the gate into rougher territory.

We moved as far as we felt was prudent with cars and then set about walking the remaining mile or so up the winding road to the Passage Graves. The area was elevated, rough enough terrain and totally deserted bar a few sheep and the occasional American tourist. We met a walking group as we descended, one of their party clambering downwards in a fugue of cigarette smoke. It was incongruous in the peaceful and clear hill air.

From a distance the stone cairns are visible and as you draw closer they appear as mounds of limestone spaced apart on the hilltop. Upon approaching you can see that there are openings in each grave, apart from one where the roof has collapsed. We learned later that this was due to dynamiting by early explorers.

As we approached the graves, the boys crawled on hands and knees into the passages, you would need to be of slight build and have no qualms of claustrophobia to venture in. They reported back on the small chamber opening out into chambers either side. It was a strange experience knowing these were the burial places for young children thousands of years ago.

The graves were first explored and to an extent damaged by R.A.S. Macalister in 1911, accompanied by Robert Lloyd Praeger and Edmund Clarence Richard Armstrong. Writing many years later Praeger gave an account of what greeted him when he and his colleagues hastily rolled back the enormous grave capstone.

“I lit three candles and stood awhile, to let my eyes accustom themselves to the dim light. There was everything, just as the last Bronze Age man (sic) had left it, three to four thousand years before. A light brownish dust covered all… There beads of stone, bone implements made from Red Deer antlers, and many fragments of much decayed pottery. On little raised recesses in the wall were flat stones, on which reposed the calcinated bones of young children.”

Apparently, it was Macalister and Praeger that destroyed the collapsed grave by trying to blow it open.

When I was young my history teacher Cormac McAleer at the Brothers in Omagh had taught us about passage graves, though the only one I had seen to date was Newgrange. In many ways Carrowkeel were more interesting and were closer to what I remember Cormac explaining all those years ago of their structure and purpose.

If you’re in the vicinity of South Sligo, Carrowkeel is well worth the time to pay a visit, stepping back in time as you ascend the speckled mountainside on foot. It is a wonderfully peaceful location with views across Sligo to Knocknarea to the west and an incredible vista to the south and east. More the pity that people don’t take the time to know and understand their own country around them. You would be surprised at what you might learn.

The road home from Sligo was marked with a detour to the Glencar waterfall. In recent times I had done a lot of work for IT Sligo using Yeats poetry as an influence. Many of the places mentioned in his work are like familiar parts of my own work landscape to the extent that a few people wrongly believe I am a Yeats expert. Nothing could be farther from the truth.

Travelling back from our stay near Lake Arrow, we turned right for Glencar Waterfall, the lake to the right, the towering cataract to our left, all the while surrounded by the most lush greenery you can see.

With IT Sligo we talked of the influences on their identify system of the blue grey of the mountain, the green of the landscape and the blue of the water. Nowhere is it better on view.

Having arrived at the lake, a large sign informed us that the local council had banned dogs from the waterfall and environs. Fair enough but there is nothing else much to do with a bounding one year old labrador, so I took one for the team and agreed to stay behind whilst the rest including my mother walked up the short distance to the famous scene.

As I moseyed about dog on lead I encountered a Polish lad bringing canoes and kayaks to the water’s edge of the lake. When the gang returned my mother who was feeling her age told me to go up and see the waterfall. She had walked up herself and said on her return “I was glad I did that.”

I too was glad I did. The sheet of water tumbled into the stream below before washing down into the Lake. It’s easy to see why William Butler Yeats was enchanted by the place. The vapour in the air hung on the ferns, the cliff overhung with greenery and the pools of dark and shade through the emerald enchanting. It’s no wonder Yeats thought of faeries and mystics in such a magical place.

I took my leave and walked back to the more sedate water’s edge of the lake where the little waves lapped on the shore. The children were a few hundred metres away having decided to take up the Polish lads offer of half an hour’s kayaking.

It was an altogether magical detour to the waters and the wild.

When’s an Irish Cow not an Irish Cow?

When It’s Being Milked at the Ploughing Championships.

When are Irish cows not Irish Cows? Well the answer would appear to be when they are milked at the Irish Ploughing Championships in Ratheniska in Laois. Glanbia refused the milk because it wasn’t Irish.

And before you say pull the other one, it’s not because it was robots that were doing the milking.

No, it was because the herd was from the North.

One of the main attractions at Ratheniska this week is a full-scale Lely robotic milking parlour complete with a herd of 40 cows. The state of the art equipment means cows are milked when they choose freeing up invaluable time for dairy farmers allowing them concentrate on other farm duties according to Lely sales manager Tomas Cooney. It’s fascinating stuff.

But in a case of silly Nordie cows, the question arose of what to do with the milk they produced? Glanbia refused to take it away from the exhibit because the cows were from the North. Not Irish milk they said. We can’t touch it they said.

Tyrone based producer Strathroy Dairy answered the Cows’ SOS and sent a tanker all the way from Omagh to collect the milk. They now have to do so for the duration of the Ploughing event.

Visitors to the exhibit have been enthralled as the cows are each being milked up to three times per day. The cows are milked in what the company calls a “free choice” system, where they choose when to be milked.

“Cows are more relaxed as they are allowed to express their natural behaviour and have the freedom of choice to be milked at any time of the day or night, mimicking the behaviour of a cow suckling a calf,” explains Mr Cooney.

The autumn-calving herd of cows have been on site since last Friday to allow them to settle into their new surroundings and get into a normal milking routine. This is the first live robotic milking demonstration to be held at a trade exhibition in Ireland. Unfortunately, no cows were available for comment.

I took Hub to the Vet’s today and

Had her put to sleep. First, we went

To the beach for a final walk. The

Dog didn’t know what I had planned for her.

No-one did. It was better

That way.

 

That’s the deal you see. I made a

Pact with myself the day I

Brought her back from Armagh as

A pup, lepping and squealing round the car

Black, shiny new she was happy

That day.

 

She sat intent behind me in the car

Head erect looking straight ahead,

Facing her fate unflinchingly,

No-one would have known

She was sick and in truth it was better

That way.

 

When she arrived here and the one year old

Boy kicked, tussled and fought the bit out.

Dog the little man’s best friend. Now she haunts

Old family photos like other dogs before her,

Sticking a snout in here, there

Every where.

 

Her coat was gleaming back, shining

The picture of healthiness, she tagged

Dutifully along into the vet’s

It broke my heart I couldn’t

Bear what I had to do

That day.

 

My daughter the animal lover had

A soft spot for her Hub and

Every morning hugged Hub before

She had anything to eat. When I told her

The news she wisely said better
